Kenton Varda presents a new Cloudflare Workers-based platform that enables users to safely personalize and share “gadgets”—individual app instances—through AI-generated code, overcoming limitations of traditional centralized software and cloud infrastructure. This approach isolates code securely while allowing dynamic feature additions by AI agents, promising a future where personal apps are customizable, collaborative, and secure.

In his talk, Kenton Varda discusses the challenges and opportunities presented by personal AI code generation (codegen) and how it disrupts traditional cloud infrastructure. He explains that the current model of software development involves a centralized developer creating an app for users, who then request features that often go unimplemented or clutter the codebase. Attempts to solve this with plug-in architectures often lead to delays and stagnation. Varda proposes a future where users can personalize apps themselves through AI agents that generate features on demand, allowing developers to maintain a clean core app while users get exactly what they need.

However, Varda points out that existing cloud infrastructure and platforms like Apple and Google tightly control software distribution, making it difficult to implement this vision. The web offers a more open alternative, but traditional web app architecture still relies on a single version of an app running on a server for all users, preventing individual customization. He argues that the infrastructure needs to evolve to support personal apps that users can modify safely and easily, which current systems are not designed to handle.

To address this, Varda introduces a new platform built on Cloudflare Workers that treats apps as “gadgets”—individual, shareable applications that users can instantiate and customize independently. These gadgets function similarly to documents in Google Docs, with each instance representing a single object like a slide deck or a whiteboard. The platform handles sharing and access control at the system level, ensuring security and collaboration without relying on the app code itself. This architecture enables safe, personalized app experiences that integrate seamlessly with AI agents.

Varda demonstrates how AI agents, such as Claude, can interact with these gadgets to add new features dynamically based on user requests. For example, he shows how the AI added formatting capabilities and SVG diagram support to a slide app to meet his specific needs. The platform’s security model isolates gadget code in sandboxed iframes and server-side workers, preventing malicious code from leaking data or compromising the system. This design makes it safe to allow AI-generated code modifications without traditional security risks.

Finally, Varda shares that this platform is built entirely on Cloudflare Workers, using durable objects and an open-source runtime called workerd, which can run locally without internet access. Although he initially planned to open source the project immediately, internal discussions at Cloudflare have delayed the release to ensure a more careful and intentional launch. Despite this, Varda is optimistic about the potential of this approach to revolutionize how personal apps are built, customized, and shared in the future.
