Nvidia has announced a $3.5 billion investment in MediaTek, marking a significant expansion of their ongoing partnership aimed at accelerating the development of advanced AI computing solutions. The investment, structured through the purchase of convertible bonds, will enable the two companies to integrate Nvidia’s GPU, NVLink, and networking technologies with MediaTek’s system-on-chips (SoCs), targeting a broad spectrum of applications.
The collaboration will focus on developing next-generation AI platforms for use in desktop supercomputers, data centers, robotics, autonomous vehicles, smartphones, IoT devices, and edge computing. A key highlight is the DGX Spark, a compact desktop AI supercomputer capable of delivering one petaflop of computing power, designed to run advanced generative AI applications locally. This technology will also serve as the foundation for a new class of Windows PCs, developed in partnership with Microsoft, tailored for the era of AI agents.
MediaTek will adopt Nvidia’s NVLink Fusion platform, allowing customers to develop custom AI accelerators (XPUs) that can be seamlessly integrated into Nvidia NVLink-connected, rack-scale AI factories. The partnership also includes the integration of Nvidia’s Spectrum-X networking switches, enhancing high-speed, scalable networking solutions for data centers and cloud environments.
Both companies emphasize the importance of flexibility, scalability, and speed to market in the rapidly evolving AI landscape. MediaTek CEO Rick Tsai noted that the proceeds from the bond program will be used to strengthen supply chain capabilities and invest in advanced packaging and interconnect technologies. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang highlighted the versatility of GPU-based architectures and the company’s open platform approach, which allows for the integration of specialized accelerators through NVLink Fusion.
Industry analysts view this partnership as a strategic move to address growing demand for specialized processors capable of handling complex AI workloads. By combining Nvidia’s AI and networking expertise with MediaTek’s efficient SoC designs and extensive customer base, the companies aim to deliver high-performance, energy-efficient AI computing solutions across cloud, enterprise, and consumer markets.
