Nvidia Makes $3.5 Billion Bet on MediaTek

Nvidia is investing $3.5 billion in MediaTek to deepen their partnership, integrating Nvidia’s NVLink and networking technologies with MediaTek’s SoCs to develop advanced AI computing solutions like the DGX Spark supercomputer and reinvented Windows PCs. This collaboration aims to accelerate AI innovation across cloud, enterprise, and edge markets by combining their ecosystems, enhancing supply chains, and delivering versatile, high-performance AI platforms over the next decade.

Nvidia and MediaTek have announced a significant expansion of their partnership, highlighted by Nvidia’s $3.5 billion investment in MediaTek through the purchase of convertible bonds. This collaboration builds on their existing work integrating Nvidia’s NVLink chip-to-chip interface with MediaTek’s SoCs, enabling seamless connectivity between MediaTek’s processors and Nvidia GPUs. A key outcome of this partnership is the development of the DGX Spark, a powerful one-petaflop desktop AI supercomputer, with plans to develop multiple generations of such edge AI and PC chips. This technology will also underpin new computing devices, including a reinvention of the Windows PC in collaboration with Microsoft.

The partnership extends beyond chip integration to include Nvidia’s networking technologies, such as NVLink Fusion and Spectrum X switches, which will be incorporated into MediaTek’s systems. This integration allows MediaTek to leverage Nvidia’s advanced networking infrastructure, facilitating faster and more efficient AI data centers and cloud deployments. Both companies emphasize the importance of speed to market and flexibility in meeting diverse customer needs across the AI computing stack, from hyperscalers to enterprise data centers and edge devices.

MediaTek CEO Rick Tsai highlighted that the proceeds from their recent $5 billion bond program will support multiple initiatives, including enhancing the global supply chain and investing further in technology development such as advanced packaging and interconnects. The partnership aims to address supply chain challenges by combining Nvidia’s and MediaTek’s extensive ecosystems, enabling customers to build specialized AI accelerators more easily while benefiting from Nvidia’s comprehensive AI factory platform, which includes GPUs, CPUs, and various networking components.

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang underscored the superiority and versatility of GPU-based architectures in accelerating the entire AI lifecycle, from data processing to inference across various AI models. While acknowledging the presence of specialized accelerators like XPUs in the market, Huang emphasized Nvidia’s open platform approach, which allows these specialized chips to connect seamlessly via NVLink Fusion to Nvidia’s infrastructure. This strategy not only supports Nvidia’s dominant position in AI computing but also fosters collaboration with partners and customers seeking customized solutions.

Finally, both leaders addressed the broader implications of their collaboration for the AI industry. They noted that the partnership is driven by customer demand for integrated, high-performance AI solutions that combine MediaTek’s leading SoCs with Nvidia’s GPUs and networking technologies. The alliance is positioned as a long-term, decade-spanning commitment aimed at accelerating innovation, expanding supply chains, and delivering comprehensive AI factory solutions that meet the evolving needs of cloud providers, enterprises, and edge computing markets worldwide.
