US-China AI Rivalry Grows With Alibaba's Anthropic Rival

The AI race in China is heating up with major players like Alibaba, DeepSeek, ByteDance, and Minimax releasing advanced models featuring competitive performance and aggressive pricing strategies. However, despite rapid innovation and market competition, concerns remain about the sector’s profitability, with experts warning that the industry may not become profitable within the next three years.

The AI race in China is intensifying with several new model releases from major players like Alibaba and DeepSeek. Alibaba recently launched a new AI model boasting 2.4 trillion parameters, making it the second-largest open-weighted model in China, just behind the Kimi K3. According to Alibaba, this new model performs competitively on benchmarks, trailing only behind Anthropic and even surpassing Kimi K3 in some areas.

DeepSeek also upgraded its AI model to Flash V4 over the weekend, which shows strong performance but still ranks below Kimi K3, the current market leader. However, DeepSeek has gained a competitive edge by significantly cutting the prices of its input and output tokens by up to 50%, making it the cheapest AI model in China and potentially boosting its market adoption.

In addition to Alibaba and DeepSeek, ByteDance and Minimax have released new video generation models within hours of each other. ByteDance’s upgraded Seedance model is known for its editing capabilities, while Minimax’s H3 model offers more natural and coherent visuals. Both models perform well in rankings, with Minimax’s H3 standing out for its competitive pricing, especially for high-resolution videos like 2K.

Despite the rapid advancements and competitive pricing, there are concerns about the profitability of the AI sector in China. Bloomberg Intelligence’s Robert Leaf warns that due to intense price competition, the industry may not become profitable within the next three years. This suggests that companies might continue operating at a loss unless pricing strategies become more rational.

Overall, the Chinese AI landscape is marked by fierce rivalry, rapid innovation, and aggressive pricing strategies. While these developments push the technology forward and offer competitive options for users, the financial sustainability of these companies remains uncertain in the near term.
