Einstein responded succinctly, expressing belief in Spinoza’s God—a concept of God revealed through the lawful harmony of the universe rather than a deity concerned with human affairs. This highlights Spinoza’s enduring influence on even the greatest scientific minds.
Tan then describes the harsh treatment Spinoza faced from his own Sephardic Jewish community in Amsterdam in 1656. At just 23 years old, Spinoza was excommunicated with a severe and unprecedented ban that forbade anyone from speaking to him, trading with him, or even reading his writings. This ban was so severe that it included no possibility of repentance and technically remains in effect to this day. Spinoza’s “crime” was holding and expressing forbidden ideas, which led to his complete social and communal isolation.
Before his excommunication, Spinoza was even offered a substantial bribe—1,000 guilders a year—to simply attend synagogue occasionally and remain silent about his controversial thoughts. He refused, valuing truth over comfort, famously stating he would not accept even ten times that amount to stop pursuing his ideas. This steadfast commitment to truth, despite the personal cost, underscores Spinoza’s dedication to intellectual integrity.
Following his excommunication, Spinoza supported himself by grinding lenses and crafting optical instruments, which were highly sought after by Europe’s leading scientists. Despite his social ostracism, he continued to contribute to science through his craftsmanship. Meanwhile, he wrote a profoundly dangerous philosophical manuscript that he could not publish during his lifetime due to its controversial nature.
Spinoza died at 44 from lung disease caused by glass dust inhalation. Before his death, he ensured his manuscript would be published posthumously by sending it securely to his publisher.
