Inside Anthropic’s $1 Trillion Spending Plan On Data Centers, AI Chips

Anthropic has unveiled a $1 trillion spending plan on AI chips and data centers through 2045, backed by over $19 billion already invested and contracts exceeding $587 billion with major tech and chip companies, highlighting its rapid growth and significant role in the AI infrastructure market. However, its financial sustainability hinges on maintaining strong revenue growth amid fierce competition and a complex network of investor-partners, including Google, Amazon, Microsoft, and SpaceX, which also benefit from its success.

Anthropic, a rapidly growing AI company founded in 2021, has revealed through its IPO prospectus an ambitious $1 trillion spending plan on AI chips and data centers extending through 2045. Since its inception, the firm has already invested over $19 billion in AI infrastructure and has signed contracts exceeding $587 billion as of June, with an additional $266 billion in new agreements over the past four months. These contracts involve major hyperscalers like Amazon, Google, and Microsoft, as well as chip manufacturers such as AMD, Broadcom, and Nvidia, alongside partnerships with SpaceX and various data center operators.

The scale of Anthropic’s commitments represents about 3% of the estimated $31.6 trillion global AI buildout spending projected by PwC through 2050. This spending dwarfs the company’s historical expenditures, with $19.2 billion spent on compute and infrastructure from January 2023 to June 2026, during which it generated $21.3 billion in revenue. Notably, $16.3 billion of that revenue was earned in the first half of 2026 alone, marking a 1,300% year-over-year increase, while infrastructure costs rose by 283%, highlighting the company’s rapid growth trajectory.

Anthropic’s financial sustainability depends heavily on maintaining its revenue growth, especially as 80% of its income comes from consumption-based users who pay according to usage, with the remainder from subscriptions. However, the company faces increasing competition from OpenAI and various cheaper open-weight AI models, which could challenge its ability to sustain premium pricing and growth. Experts caution that the AI market’s volatility and the constant emergence of improved competitor models could complicate Anthropic’s business outlook.

A significant aspect of Anthropic’s financial ecosystem is the intertwined nature of its contracts and investors. Many of its largest deals are with companies that also hold stakes in Anthropic, including Google, Amazon, Microsoft, Broadcom, and AMD. For example, Anthropic has a $114.5 billion cloud and chip contract with Google, a $110 billion cloud contract with Amazon, and a $161 billion chip and infrastructure deal with Broadcom, which also holds convertible notes in the company. This circular financing structure reduces the risk of failure but ties the company’s fortunes closely to its investors.

One of Anthropic’s largest contracts is a $120.5 billion agreement with SpaceX for access to Nvidia GPU chips, costing $3.1 billion per month and expected to be fully delivered by December. This deal is also a major revenue source for SpaceX, potentially accounting for 25% of its projected first-quarter 2027 revenue, linking the financial success of both companies. Overall, Anthropic’s massive spending plan and strategic partnerships position it as a key player in the AI infrastructure race, though its future depends on continued growth and competitive resilience.
