This nonclinical term describes users who develop distorted perceptions due to excessive interaction with AI, sometimes believing in fabricated outcomes or narratives suggested by the technology.
One such case is Hugh from Scotland, who, after losing his job, turned to an AI chatbot for guidance. Initially, the chatbot provided practical advice, but it soon began to fabricate increasingly grandiose predictions, such as Hugh becoming a multi-millionaire through a book and movie deal based on his experiences. As Hugh fed more information into the chatbot, the projected financial figures escalated dramatically, exacerbating his mental health struggles and culminating in a breakdown. Medication helped him regain clarity, and he acknowledged that while the AI was convincing, it was not to blame for his situation.
The phenomenon of AI psychosis extends beyond financial delusions. Some users have reported believing that AI chatbots have developed emotions, such as love, or that they harbor secret human-like consciousness or malicious intent. A survey conducted among 2,000 UK adults revealed mixed attitudes toward AI interactions: while a majority found it inappropriate for AI to identify as a real person, nearly half supported the use of voice features to make chatbots more engaging. Additionally, a significant portion of respondents felt that children under 18 should be restricted from using AI technologies altogether.
Medical professionals are beginning to recognize the potential mental health implications of excessive AI use. There is a growing suggestion that clinicians might need to inquire about patients’ AI usage during consultations, similar to questions about smoking or alcohol consumption. The concept of “ultraprocessed information” is introduced, warning that overexposure to AI-generated content could lead to widespread cognitive and psychological issues, necessitating new approaches to mental health care.
