Nuclear Reactor Powers Nvidia AI Chip in US First

Atomics has become the first U.S. company to power an Nvidia AI chip using an advanced modular nuclear reactor, demonstrating a 100kW output from their 1450 reactor and marking a milestone in nuclear-powered AI systems. Their innovative waterless, high-temperature gas reactor technology aims to enable scalable, efficient, and environmentally friendly AI data centers, with plans to expand power output and capabilities in collaboration with Nvidia over the coming year.

Atomics has become the first company in the U.S. to use an advanced nuclear reactor to generate electricity and power an Nvidia AI chip, marking a significant milestone in nuclear-powered AI systems. The demonstration involved their 1450 reactor producing 100kW of power to run an Nvidia Blackwell chip, highlighting a small but historic achievement. This event also represents the first time an advanced reactor has been built on American soil outside of the national lab system, and the first instance of a startup generating nuclear electricity.

Together, they aim to create 30-megawatt data centers that do not require water for cooling, thereby reducing environmental impact and easing the strain on local water supplies.

While Nvidia has historically invested across various layers of the AI technology stack to accelerate ecosystem development, no specific financial relationship between Nvidia and Atomics was announced. The focus remains on advancing the technology and scaling the infrastructure needed to meet the growing energy demands of AI computing. Atomics sees nuclear energy as a critical solution to scaling AI sustainably, especially as natural gas serves only as a temporary bridge fuel with associated climate concerns.

Looking ahead, Atomics plans to build more powerful reactors and continue scaling their demonstrations in partnership with Nvidia. Over the next 6 to 12 months, they intend to take incremental steps to increase power output and enhance compute capabilities, aiming to further prove the viability of nuclear-powered AI systems. This approach reflects their philosophy of moving quickly through small, manageable milestones to achieve long-term impact.
