Pentagon Partners With Musk’s Grok on New Military AI Strategy

The Pentagon is partnering with Elon Musk’s Grok AI to integrate advanced artificial intelligence into its military operations, aiming to accelerate modernization and transform the U.S. military into an “AI-first” force. This initiative includes launching seven key projects with clear accountability, rapid experimentation, and a focus on developing new AI-driven methods of warfare.

The Pentagon has announced a new partnership with Elon Musk’s Grok, an AI model developed by xAI, as part of its ongoing efforts to modernize military technology. Grok will soon be integrated into GenAI.mil, the Department of Defense’s AI platform, and is expected to go live later this month. This collaboration aims to bring cutting-edge AI capabilities to both unclassified and classified networks across the entire department, marking a significant step forward in the military’s adoption of advanced artificial intelligence.

To accelerate progress, the Pentagon is launching a comprehensive AI acceleration strategy designed to build on the military’s existing lead in AI, which was established during President Trump’s first term. The strategy focuses on removing bureaucratic obstacles, prioritizing investments, and fostering a culture of rapid experimentation. The goal is to transform the U.S. military into an “AI-first” warfighting force, leveraging AI across all domains—from administrative operations in the Pentagon to tactical deployments on the front lines.

A key component of this strategy is the initiation of seven “pace-setting” projects, each targeting critical mission areas such as warfighting, intelligence, and enterprise operations. Each project will have a single accountable leader, aggressive timelines, and clear, measurable outcomes. These leaders will report monthly on their progress, ensuring accountability and transparency. The projects are designed to work closely with warfighters and operational partners, incorporating real-time feedback to ensure practical and effective solutions.

The Pentagon emphasizes that these initiatives are not mere research experiments or bureaucratic exercises. Instead, they represent a new standard of execution, focused on delivering tangible results and fostering a culture of rapid iteration and learning from failure.
