SoftBank sold its entire $5.8 billion stake in Nvidia to fund massive investments in AI ventures, including a $100 billion to $500 billion partnership with OpenAI and a large manufacturing facility in Arizona. Despite uncertainty about an AI bubble, SoftBank remains confident in the sector’s long-term potential, leveraging substantial recent earnings driven by the soaring valuations of OpenAI and other AI companies in its portfolio.
SoftBank has recently sold its entire stake in Nvidia, generating $5.8 billion from the transaction. This move has sparked discussions about whether it signals concerns over Nvidia’s valuation or the broader AI market. However, during a recent conference call in Tokyo, SoftBank’s CFO clarified that the sale is not due to doubts about Nvidia’s growth prospects. Instead, the funds are intended to fuel SoftBank’s own ambitious investment plans, particularly in artificial intelligence.
Masayoshi Son, SoftBank’s CEO, is focusing on deploying capital into various AI ventures. The company is partnering with OpenAI in the United States through its Stargate venture, where they plan to invest between $100 billion and $500 billion. Additionally, SoftBank has plans to invest hundreds of billions of dollars in an Arizona manufacturing facility, underscoring their commitment to expanding their AI-related infrastructure and capabilities.
When asked about the possibility of an AI bubble, SoftBank’s CFO was cautious and non-committal, indicating that it is difficult to determine from their vantage point. Despite this uncertainty, SoftBank continues to make significant investments in AI, signaling confidence in the sector’s long-term potential rather than reacting to short-term market hype or fears.
SoftBank’s recent financial performance has been remarkable, with the company reporting $60 billion in earnings in the most recent quarter—about six times higher than analyst expectations. Much of this profit came from the revaluation of private companies within their portfolio, particularly those held through the Vision Fund and their Latin American investment fund. A significant portion of these gains, approximately $13 billion out of $19 billion, was attributed to the increased valuation of OpenAI.
OpenAI’s valuation has surged dramatically, rising from around $150 billion last year to $260 billion pre-money, and now reaching approximately $500 billion. This sharp increase has allowed SoftBank to realize substantial gains. Besides OpenAI, SoftBank’s portfolio includes other promising companies such as Perplexity and Runway AI, which have also contributed to their recent financial success. Overall, SoftBank is strategically reallocating capital to support its expansive AI ambitions while capitalizing on the strong performance of its existing investments.
