His startup recently launched what it claims to be the world’s first fully autonomous mining operation at the Copper One mine in Southeast Utah. The operation employs automated drills, robotic haul trucks, and an AI platform called Mariana OS to manage and coordinate the entire mining process. Additionally, the company uses Boston Dynamics’ Spot robot dog equipped with sensors to patrol and inspect the 10,000-acre site, showcasing a high level of automation and technological integration.
Mariana Minerals aims to address the challenges of workforce shortages and high labor costs in remote mining regions by leveraging autonomy. The Copper One mine had previously shut down due to these issues, but automation offers a solution by reducing reliance on human labor, particularly haul truck drivers. Caldwell anticipates that while the nature of jobs at the site will shift, overall employment will increase, focusing more on technical and maintenance roles rather than traditional mining positions.
The company’s AI platform analyzes ore in real-time using sensor data and facilitates communication between autonomous drills and haul trucks, each equipped with their own AI systems. This integration is expected to significantly reduce costs, with Caldwell projecting a 30% decrease in refining expenses and a 40-50% reduction in mining costs. Mariana Minerals also plans to expand its operations by refining copper scrap at the Utah site and developing a lithium refining operation in Texas, recovering lithium from wastewater in oil and gas fields.
Copper is a critical metal used extensively in electronics, wiring, batteries, and industrial equipment, with the U.S. currently importing about half of its supply. Mariana Minerals, backed by $100 million from prominent venture capital firms including Andreessen Horowitz and Breakthrough Energy, aims to boost domestic copper production and refining capacity. The company targets producing 50,000 tons of refined copper annually by 2030 from both new mining and recycled sources, helping to reduce U.S. dependence on foreign copper, much of which is refined in China.
Caldwell’s expertise stems from his previous role at Tesla, where he managed battery minerals and metals, including battery recycling and lithium refinery design. Mariana’s autonomy technology incorporates advanced AI techniques similar to those used in self-driving cars and robotics. The operation uses autonomous drills from Sandvik and robotic haul trucks from Pronto, a company acquired by Uber co-founder Travis Kalanick.
